Dr. Jimmy Chan is Honorary Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, School of Clinical Medicine Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed). After gaining his medical degree in HKU in 1998, Dr. Chan furthered his surgical training in head & neck surgery and plastic & reconstructive surgery before pursuing advanced fellowship training at world-renowned institutions which are MD Anderson Cancer Center and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He then obtained both Master of Surgery in 2008 and Doctor of Philosophy in 2015 from HKUMed.
Specializing in complex head and neck oncology, Dr. Chan has developed particular expertise in the management of recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), employing a comprehensive approach that includes endoscopic, robotic and open salvage surgeries. His clinical practice also focuses on laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers, where he has pioneered innovative reconstruction techniques using free jejunal flaps for laryngo-pharyngeal defects. Complementing his surgical expertise, Dr. Chan leads translational research programs investigating biomarkers for prognostication and personalized treatment strategies in NPC.
Dr. Chan has made significant contributions to the field through over 160 peer-reviewed publications (H-index 25), 24 book chapters, and more than 160 invited lectures at international conferences. His research spans clinical trials, surgical outcomes studies, and laboratory investigations aimed at improving treatment paradigms for head and neck cancers. He was also the President of the Hong Kong Head & Neck Society in 2012, 2014 and 2024.
